How many students are in MOOCs?

Although the idea has been around since the 20th century, it was not until around 2012 that it came to attention in Japan. The University of Tokyo began delivering MOOCs in 2013. According to Class Central, there are 220 million MOOC learners globally as of December 2021 (China excluded). There has been a considerable increase in MOOC audience since the Covid-19 pandemic.
