MOOC platforms

UTokyo MOOCs are hosted either on edX or Coursera. edX is jointly created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in 2012. Coursera is founded in 2012 by Andrew Ng and Daphne Kollar of Stanford University. Since 2013, UTokyo MOOC has launched 21 courses. The hosting platform will be decided based on course content, and in consultation with instructors.

Since MOOCs are designed to reach a global audience, most courses are accessible for free by registering for an ID. Discussion forums are also available for students to communicate and discuss with each other. For edX, however, you have to enrol in the paid verified track in order to do assignments. Coursera offers free access to lecture videos and quizzes, but costs for a certificate of completion.
